The Artist's Way @ Playhaus, EVENINGS!

  • Playhaus DC 1325 5th Street Northeast Washington, DC, 20002 United States (map)

By popular demand, we're excited to announce a second EVENING GROUP option, for the Artist’s Way with Carter Umhau, at Playhaus!

Join the community at Playhaus for a group experience walking week by week through Julia Cameron’s legendary The Artist’s Way. This thirteen-week group creates community around creative practice, inviting you into a process of discovering, healing, and transforming your relationship to your creativity and the weird, brilliant artist you know you are deep down.

Buy your tickets via Eventbrite!

The Artist’s Way itself is set up as a twelve-week workbook that walks you through an exploration around the stories you’ve been told and absorbed around your creativity, and invites you to engage creative tools and self-reflection to heal your inner artist and break down creative blocks. At Playhaus, you’ll join a group of other creatives willing to engage with honesty around their own self-critic, their own creative practice (or lack thereof), and their own creative aspirations. The group will start off with a kick off meeting and then the following week we'll dive into the twelve-week workbook! This is an anti-perfectionist group, so please feel free to join us even if--especially if!!--you're scared you won't be able to "do the whole book perfectly." Come as you are!

Each of the thirteen sessions will meet on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00-8:30pm at Playhaus, starting Wednesday, March 13th and going through consecutively until June 5th.

Carter Umhau, MA, LMHC (she/her)—a psychotherapist, creative mentor, artist, and writer—will be hosting and leading this group. She has been leading creative workshops and creative therapy groups since 2009, and loves working one-on-one as a creative mentor with folks that are recovering their own creative freedom and life force, or that want to use their creativity as a source of their own medicine. Her relationship with the Artist’s Way began seventeen years ago, and she has incorporated ‘morning pages’ (if you don’t know, you will soon!) into her daily life since then, and essentially evangelizing about the book to anyone who will listen. She has extensive experience holding spaces that are playful, inclusive, deep, and well-boundaried, and she's so excited to create an environment for both the creative-curious and the creatively "established" to enter into the Artist's Way world at Playhaus! (You can learn more about her at www.carterumhau.com or by reading her newly-started Substack newsletter, Peach & The Pith.

Feel free to email Carter at carterfleetu@gmail.com with any questions about the group, or to join the waitlist for future in-person and online versions of this course!

This group is for you if…

- you're interested in recovering your relationship to play and creativity in an anti-perfectionist space
- you’re hoping to make this year more creative than the years before…

- you’re feeling stuck, unfulfilled, and disconnected from the creative spirit you know is in you…

- you want to engage your own relationship to art within a creative community…

- you’re an established artist who’s stopped feeling a sense of play...

- you wonder if you’re a creative person but you get trapped in perfectionism whenever you consider trying anything remotely creative…

- you’ve always wanted to do the Artist’s Way but never could hold yourself to it!

- you’ve never heard of the Artist’s Way but you’ve been looking for something like this and you just have a feeling about it!
- you are wanting to be part of the group but are worried you won't be able to do each and everything in the workbook... because that's okay!

You’ll be in charge of acquiring your own copy of the Artist’s Way and, by joining the group, you are committing to doing the work on your own! There’s no need to do it perfectly, but we do ask that you’re engaging the process your way. Groups will meet weekly and be a space to share experiences, discoveries, and reflections from the week and to engage in guided conversation about creative blocks, resistance, and artistic identity.

The price includes...

- 19.5 hours of group over 13 weeks at Playhaus in DC's Union Market...so that's less than $40 a group!

- An invitation to join a group chat where you can touch base with folks outside of group time—share process in real time, encouraging your accountability and engagement with your own creative practice.

- Discounted access to one-on-one sessions with group facilitator Carter Umhau, a practiced creative coach, psychotherapist, artist, and writer, to go deeper around your process doing the Artist’s Way

Paying in full up-front provides a $50 discount. Please note that paying for the first six-weeks of the course is our way of providing a payment plan. We will reach out to you after five weeks to invite you to complete your second installment of $275. There are a limited number of pay-what-you-can spots in this group. We want you to join us, so please reach out to Carter at carterfleetu@gmail.com with any questions!
